Lavender Family Photo Sessions | Victoria & Cowichan Valley Photographer

I’ve done many lavender sessions over the years, but this is my first year that I am offering lavender minis on Vancouver Island and I can’t wait! To prepare everyone for a lavender field session and give some outfit inspiration I thought I’d share some photos from past lavender minis I have done.

I know for Lavender’s the most common colour choice is white… but try and add in ivory, cream, grey, pastels, and even pale colour tones to keep away from the common white and blue jean look.

When it comes to your photo session there a few things that will help you feel more comfortable and prepared…

1.) With family or couples photos, start with one person’s outfit - I find it best to lay it out on the bed or floor and put everyone’s outfits side by side. Take elements or colours from one outfit to create coordinating outfits.

2.) DON’T try to MATCH...try to pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead and compliment one another. Steer away from the white shirts and blue jeans look if you can. If every family member wore something like that or similar it becomes a very blended photograph and quite boring to frame and hang on your wall. I am not saying steer completely away from white but having an added a pop of colour somewhere will look very beautiful in the lavender field.

3.) MOST PATTERNS are actually ok...however, graphics are not favourable for portraits (please, no logos). If you do decide on wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting. I also love it when there is one pattern and solids to compliment it. If each family member comes wearing a pattern it becomes too busy for photos, simple is best!

4.) Empty your pockets! Literally. You don’t want to have key chains or phones showing through your pockets and remember to remove those hair elastics around the wrists!

5.) Most of all I just want everyone to have fun! Let kids be kids! Run, laugh, play with your child(ren). I am a professional kid chaser behind the camera, so don’t worry at all, we will capture some great memories!

Can’t wait to share a blog post from this year’s lavender mini sessions in Cobble Hill, British Columbia!
