What To Wear For Your Fall Photos
With September here already… the thought of Fall is buzzing in peoples minds. Cozy sweaters, crisp leafs, pumpkin spice everything (not for me though…. I love me loads and loads of apple everything!) anyways, what I am trying to get at is if you live in an area where the trees change colours, it’s likely one if not your only favourite season.
With all those beautiful colours comes the BUSIEST time of year for photographers. From weddings to family sessions, we are usually jam packed! I know how special these photos are for my clients as for some the Fall symbolizes a new chapter, a new fresh start.. a new year ahead. So having updated photos is perfect to honour those moments and also perfect for your holiday greeting cards and gift giving needs ;) Hellllooooo Homesense and adorable picture frames!
So with that being said.. you’ve likely already booked your fall photo session with your photographer, and if you haven’t… hmmm make sure to get on it soon!
I wanted to give you some inspiration and tips for the perfect Fall outfit for yourself, your family and significant other.
1.) With family or couples photos, start with one person’s outfit - I find it best to lay it out on the bed or floor and put everyone’s outfits side by side. Take elements or colours from one outfit to create coordinating outfits.
2.) DON’T try to MATCH...try to pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. If everyone wore the same exact colours/outfits (ex. white shirt and blue jeans) how boring would those images be? You’d also end up blending together and what you really want is for the colours to pop.
3.) Don’t be afraid to be BOLD! Accessorize and make your outfits your own! Scarves, bold necklaces and fun shoes are always welcomed!
4.) MOST PATTERNS are actually ok...however, graphics are not favourable for portraits (please, no logos). If you’re wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting. I also love it when there is one pattern and solids to compliment it.
5.) Most often, for my couples engagement photos they like to have one casual, everyday outfit and then one outfit that is dressier! This will give your shoot two totally different “looks”. In the colder snowy months dress coats work nicely as well as layered sweaters, scarves and even blankets to snuggle under.
6.) Empty your pockets! Literally. You don’t want to have key chains or phones showing through your pockets and remember to remove those hair elastics around the wrists!
7.) Most important tip… relax! Always pick an outfit that you feel comfortable in, it’ll help you feel more yourself while a camera is pointed towards you. Same applies for dressing your kids - if they don’t like the outfit, prepare for miserable faces and tears. Maybe let them help pick an outfit as well. The more fun the getting ready process is, the more they’ll enjoy the whole photo session experience too!
Oh… one more thing, fur babies are always allowed (check with your photographer before just incase.. but with my sessions, I am all for it!)
So there you have it… some tips to help you with your Fall photos this year. I hope this inspired you to revamp your already chosen outfits with a few more accessories, or maybe a trip to your favourite clothing store is in order… whatever the case - have fun with it, and feel free to share this blog post with anyone you know who needs a little inspiration for their upcoming photo session!
Xo,
Katie
